Mom Confessions

Resentments and escape fantasies

“I resent what childbirth and breastfeeding have done to my body!” Donna, mother of a nine-month-old

Who hasn’t eyed their stretch marks and saggy belly and felt resentful?! “There’s an incredible amount of pressure on women to look like celebrity moms who have the help of nutritionists, personal trainers, and sometimes surgery to get back in shape,” says Dr. Atkins. “Your body will be different after a baby, but part of embracing a child is embracing what allowed it to come into the world. Give yourself time to get back into shape; a few years after childbirth, many women look better than they did before having kids.”

“I adore my husband, but sometimes I fantasize about his untimely demise so that I can spend a decade or two smoking cigarettes, drinking margaritas, and generally living a totally debauched life.” Lisa, mother of two

Surprisingly, this is a healthy fantasy, says Dr. Atkins, because you want a break from having any responsibilities to anyone. “Don’t be afraid of these fantasies; they’re a release and they allow you to go on being a great mom.”

Just recently I took a trip without my kids and was pleased to discover that I didn’t miss them or my husband. In fact, I fantasized about not returning…at all!”Patty, mother of a nine-year-old and a thirteen-year-old

If you know they’re taken care of when you’re away, you don’t need to worry about your kids; just relax and savor your time alone, says Dr. Atkins. “Really, if you’re going to think about your kids the whole time, why go away at all?”

"Sometimes I say that I have to work after the kids go to bed and then I spend hours on perezhilton.com and other trashy sites while my husband folds laundry alone upstairs.” Lisa, mother of two

“Count your blessings if he’s not complaining!” says Winkler. If you feel guilty, ask your husband how he feels; maybe he’s watching the hockey game and doesn’t even mind. Try setting a timer to limit the amount of time that runs away on you while you’re on the computer.
